AG Bell is excited to welcome four NIH-funded keynote speakers to its 2026 Global Listening and Spoken Language Symposium, June 4-6 in Arlington, Va. These four researchers bring a wealth of knowledge and perspective on growing and developing Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) in individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Every year, our Symposium keynote speakers bring a fresh and meaningful perspective to the work in which LSL professionals are engaged. One of our attendees from last year had this to say: “The keynote speakers are always a highlight for me, and this time was no exception. Their work provided valuable insights for professionals supporting children who are DHH and their families. The research, practical ideas, and the passion and knowledge that all the presenters showcased was amazing!”

Valerie Sung, MBBS(Hons), FRACP, MPH, Ph.D., GAICD, is a consultant pediatrician at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital, Principal Research Fellow and Co-Group Leader at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne. Her clinical and research program on hearing loss in children was recognized by a 2019 L’Oréal-UNESCO Australia For Women in Science Fellowship.

Her session will explore a national data system called the Australian National Child Hearing Health Outcomes Registry (ANCHOR). This session will discuss the elements required to build a national data system that meets the needs of those with a lived experience of hearing loss. Through co-designed research, building stakeholder engagement, and innovative thinking, national data collection can build an enduring hearing health system for children who are DHH.

Erin Ingvalson, Ph.D., is a research associate professor in Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Washington where she directs the Listen and Learn Lab. Recent work in her lab has focused on understanding how children who are DHH learn spoken language and develop literacy skills.

During her session on Literacy Development in Preschoolers who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing, attendees to both the in-person and on-demand Symposium will learn about efforts to track emergent development in preschoolers. Information will include an explanation about pre-reading skills and how those skills help develop literacy abilities in children with hearing loss.

Chrisanda Sanchez, Au.D., is director of the Children’s Hearing Program at the University of Miami Ear Institute and associate professor of Clinical Otolaryngology and Pediatrics.

This session will discuss her perspective on Treating the Whole Child: When It’s More than Hearing. To address a whole-child approach to pediatric hearing healthcare, emphasis should be placed on early intervention, interdisciplinary collaboration, and co-treatment models. The goal is to support developmental, academic, social, and emotional outcomes while centering care on the family’s experience.

Viral Tejani, Au.D., Ph.D., is a cochlear implant audiologist and associate professor of Otolaryngology. He provides clinical services and conducts research in cochlear implantation. He completed his Au.D. at the University of Maryland and his Ph.D. at the University of Iowa. He was also born with hearing loss and uses hearing aids.

Hearing Preservation Cochlear Implantation: An Evolution and Expansion of Hearing Healthcare explains how advances in cochlear implant surgery techniques preserve residual hearing. Attendees will participate in a discussion on the benefits of maintaining residual hearing for today’s recipients as compared to early cochlear implant recipient experiences.

Join us in Arlington, Va., June 4-6 to hear from these amazing speakers in person! If travel is not an option, these presentations will be available for on-demand viewing after the in-person event. Register today to reserve your spot at this year’s Symposium!

When It’s More than Hearing).
