The Power of One: World Hearing Day 2025 Special Issue

This World Hearing Day, we invite you to read four stories about how one person can create impactful change.

What can one person really do? Sometimes it seems not much. But sometimes, one small act, one small comment, one small gesture can create a domino effect that impacts the lives of many others. This World Hearing Day, we wanted to focus on just that…the cascading impact just one person can have on the people around them, and the people who follow after.

Please enjoy this special issue of Volta Voices and these inspiring stories of the Power of One:

As I meet with people all over the world, their stories always start with one person…one person who inspired them to think differently, to see a need that was waiting to be filled, and encouraged them to start down a path in that direction.

As families of children with hearing loss all over the world begin to see Listening and Spoken Language as a viable option, they need people like Paige Stringer, who seeks to train health care staff in other countries to provide care for children with hearing aids or cochlear implants. Her work with the Global Foundation For Children With Hearing Loss (GFCHL) has made huge strides in filling a global shortage of professionals in countries where Listening and Spoken Language outcomes are possible with the right support.

In 1992, 60-Minutes ran a story about a young girl who was using cochlear implants to hear. That story was seen by a mother of two deaf children, and sent their family on a journey towards a life they didn’t know was possible. Today, thanks to that one story, Jasmine and Justin Simmons not only can hear and talk thanks to cochlear implants, but Jasmine is an audiologist and author herself. Not content to simply live, she wants to help others by sharing her story and hopes to inspire more families to seek a different outcome than what they were told was possible.

Margaret Hargrove is an advocate and certified LSLS in Maryland. Not only has she advocated successfully for Listening and Spoken Language resources to be made available, she has worked tirelessly to ensure that parents are given unbiased, comprehensive information about language options through the state EHDI program. Her work continues to inspire hope for anyone who sees an imbalance in what parents are told is available for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Meredith Sugar is an AG Bell board member and a parent to a child who is deaf. Thanks to one kind gesture, one phone call, her and her son’s life changed. Her story is full of “ones”: people who took the time to guide them, steer them, and support them as her son learned to use Listening and Spoken Language. Now, she runs a successful parent Facebook group where she looks out for those who need that one person to help them, even if it’s just with a word of encouragement.

Indeed, one person can make a big difference. This World Hearing Day, we want to make sure that these inspiring individuals, perhaps, reach just one more person with their stories. And that someday soon, all these “ones” will be the reason Listening and Spoken Language is a viable option for all children with hearing loss all over the world.
