Getting Connected: One Rural District’s Journey

With more deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) students entering general education, districts are struggling to support these students. This is the story of a small rural district making strides to ensure that their (DHH) students are getting the services and supports they need to be successful, all provided virtually.
By the end of this session, the learner will be able to:
- Identify the challenges in getting DHH children access to qualified professionals.
- Recognize the potential impacts of virtual support for DHH children.
- Explain some of the positive impacts virtual support can have for DHH school populations.
Motivation: Help Make Self-Advocacy Work

How do professionals ensure that deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students are motivated to advocate for the supports they need? This session will discuss self-determination theory as it relates to motivation and self-advocacy, the important of self-understanding, and strategies to help DHH students become strong advocates for their success.
By the end of this session, the learner will be able to:
- Discuss the importance of self-advocacy skills in DHH students.
- Explain how motivation and self-determination theory can support building self-advocacy skills.
- Identify some strategies and resources for supporting self-advocacy skills.
