Students who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) are at risk for social isolation and emotional loneliness. Teachers of the deaf can address and support these areas of development in the classroom. This presentation identifies specific children’s books and activities to support teachers in addressing concepts of self, identity, and self-determination in mainstream classrooms.
By the end of this session, the learner will be able to:
- Describe developmental characteristics that put students who are DHH at risk for bullying, isolation, loneliness, and marginalization in schools where others hear.
- Identify three activities that address the development of self-concept, positive identity, and self-determination in students who are DHH.
- Identify three children’s books, whose themes and characters deal with issues of self-concept, positive identity and self-determination and discuss their use in supporting a social-emotional curriculum.
