Navigating the Journey: Empowering DHH Families | Virotherapy: A Next-Century Treatment for Cholesteatoma
(30-minute session)
Families with children who have medical needs face challenges like transportation issues, limited resources, and inadequate insurance. Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) families experience additional barriers, including a lack of education about hearing loss. Parent Navigators provide essential support, and the panel will share insights for creating similar programs.
By the end of this session, the learner will be able to:
- Define Parent Navigation services.
- Define obstacles families face through each step of the deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) journey.
- Explain how the DHH Family Engagement and Education Program addressed these challenges in Georgia and discuss how participants can apply a similar approach in their own communities.

For individuals with conductive hearing loss, pharmaceutical and surgery remain the standard of care. This presentation will review recent research showing the potential of virotherapy for non-surgical eradication of the conductive hearing disorder of cholesteatoma.
By the end of this session, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the etiology of cholesteatoma.
- Identify the standard treatment options for cholesteatoma.
- Describe the potential utility of virotherapy for the non-surgical treatment of cholesteatoma.
