If you visit the Alamo, another stop to add to your list is Candyverse. Only steps away and next door to the famous Menger Hotel, this unique candy store is owned by Andres Cravioto, who is deaf and is now part of the media team at AG Bell.

It wasn’t until Andres attended the AG Bell Young Leaders Board 2024 retreat this past summer in Texas that he met others who communicated primarily via listening and spoken language. He called his experience “the very definition of coming home.”

Hearing Loss Journey

The 29-year-old San Antonio, Texas resident was born in Mexico and moved to the U.S. when he was 9 years old. At age 2, he lost hearing in his right ear due to an ear infection. The doctor told his parents to raise him like a regular kid. He loved going to speech therapy; his fascination with languages and music helped.

When wrestling in high school, Andres was hit in the jaw during a match but didn’t think anything of it. When he got a headache, he figured it would just go away. The next day when working on something in class, he didn’t hear when the teacher called him. It wasn’t until she was next to his desk yelling at him that he realized something was wrong with his hearing.

“That’s when my hearing problems truly began, as my hearing went away for a while and I got chronic permanent tinnitus,” Andres says. “I stopped wrestling once I made the connection that somehow those additional hip tosses and suplexes could detrimentally affect my hearing further.”

Andres wore hearing aids for about two weeks but didn’t like them, so he went without until he was an adult many years later. After he turned 24, he experienced episodes where his hearing disappeared temporarily. Every time he came back, the decibel range decreased. This is when he began wearing hearing aids. When his hearing goes away, however, hearing aids don’t help. The doctors have no explanation for what causes these episodes. Andres has temporarily lost his hearing half a dozen times to date. It’s always unexpected and it takes a couple of cycles of high-dose steroids to “magically” make it come back. As a result, Andres leads a healthy and stress-free lifestyle to potentially mitigate recurrences. It’s been about a year since the last episode.

In the Candy Business

A few years ago, Andres and his business partners stumbled upon a “sweet opportunity” to turn their love for sweet treats into a business. “Candy just brings so much joy and nostalgia to people of all ages, and Candyverse wants to share that happiness with everyone who walks through the store’s doors,” he says. “It creates an impact on people to see a delectable assortment of bright, colorful, sugary treats from all over the world. From sourcing the best and most unique candies to creating fun displays that make customers’ eyes light up, every day is a sweet experience. There’s nothing as satisfying as seeing other people genuinely enjoy something you created with a lot of hard work, sacrifice, and passion.”

Running Candyverse is Andres’ full-time occupation. He says what makes the store stand out is the wide range of candies offered, from classic favorites to hard-to-find international treats. They have been able to reach many new customers through social media. They have the top-selling candy on TikTok; other than in store, the social media platform is their main order hub.

The store has its own candy called Mamalokas, which are strawberry sour belts with chamoy. It is freshly made and will evoke the taste of San Antonio anywhere you go. Candyverse delivers all over the continental U.S. and is even on Doordash.

Candyverse also loves hosting special events, like AG Bell’s Halloween Contest. They have also opened their doors for high school field trips, haunted tours, and baby showers. The business owners have their fair share of challenges, like keeping up with changing trends on TikTok. They realized there is a big market for exotic and novelty candy dictated by viral trends. “It’s crucial to constantly innovate and introduce new products to stay relevant in the ever-changing candy market,” Andres says.

How Deafness Factors In

Being deaf in one ear and using hearing aids presents some unique challenges in running a candy store, but Andres says it isn’t impossible. In fact, he says, “being deaf might bring a unique out-of-the-box perspective and innovative solutions to the business, making it more inclusive and accessible to everyone.”

He cites some ways they have improved communication, like implementing a Clover sales terminal to facilitate sales transactions by making them entirely visual. The staff encourages a culture of patience and understanding, as well as a knowledge of basic ASL. Clear signage and visual aids around the store help customers navigate and find what they need without having to ask questions.

“Using creative solutions, embracing your unique perspective, and using the right strategies to overcome any obstacles shows the world that anything is possible with determination and a positive attitude,” Andres says.

The Future

Andres has always loved learning. At 16, he began teaching himself how to play three instruments. He’s glad he did, as he can no longer hear certain pitches. He has also studied Chinese on his own for several years. He has a Bachelors in Economics from the University of Texas at San Antonio, graduating in three years by taking 18 semester hours every quarter to take advantage of a full scholarship. He would love to get his Masters or PhD in something like law, theology, philosophy, literature, or ancient history.

The exotic animal lover and amateur biologist has so much planned for the future and says his journey is only beginning. Aside from work and volunteering, he wants to learn as many languages as possible, finish writing a book, release an EP, and be in the best shape of his life before reaching 30.

Seven years ago, he was playing Motley Crue and Guns N’ Roses on the Sunset Strip trying to make it as a musician. He thought that was what life was all about. “Today, my goals, dreams, and achievements are much bigger than I could have imagined back then, but I’ve learned that as long as you stay true to your purpose, life will take you exactly where you need to go,” says Andres.
