What is Deaf Awareness Month?

Deaf Awareness Month takes place during September and is celebrated to bring awareness and recognize the identities and needs of everyone who is deaf or hard of hearing. Deaf Awareness Month also shines a light on their different lifestyles and cultures as well as shows the importance of effective communication skills. Above all, it empowers every individual who is a part of or associated with the deaf community and helps others who are not to better understand who they are and what they go through.

Throughout September, Volta Voices will be shining a spotlight on individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing, how they are thriving in their own lives and communities, and how they work to advocate for themselves and educate those around them.

How does Deaf Awareness Month help advocate for the deaf community?

The biggest way that Deaf Awareness Month helps advocate for the deaf community is that it increases public awareness of their challenges but it also aims to show the positive aspects of the community. By doing this it brings attention to different organizations and businesses that also advocate for the deaf and hard of hearing and encourages their inclusion in society, jobs, schools, etc.
