AG Bell congratulates Valerie Lew, MA, CCC-SLP, on receiving the 2024 Doreen Pollack LSLS Cert. AVT Scholarship. Valerie is a pediatric speech-language pathologist at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. She has worked at UCLA in outpatient clinic and inpatient acute hospital settings for the past nine years. She is also the lead speech pathologist on the UCLA Cochlear Implant Team.
This professional scholarship is the result of a partnership between the AG Bell Academy and the Listen Foundation honoring Doreen Pollack, a pioneer in the standards of excellence in Listening and Spoken Language. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist professionals in fulfilling the requirements for certification as a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist Auditory-Verbal Therapist (LSLS Cert. AVT).
Volta Voices talked to Valerie about this honor.
How did you end up in this field?
In high school, I volunteered at my local hospital’s outpatient pediatric multidisciplinary clinic for children with special needs and developmental disabilities. I also did respite care for a little girl with autism through my high school years. I thought I wanted to be an occupational therapist! When I went to college, Texas Christian University (TCU) had an outstanding undergraduate Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) program that felt like a better fit for me.
Working summers at the John Tracy Clinic with my mentors, including Dr. Helen Morrison, PhD, CCC-AuD, LSLS, Cert. AVT, through college really changed my mind and led me toward working with children with hearing loss and Listening and Spoken Language (LSL).
My specialty interests include working with children with hearing loss with congenital CMV, single-sided deafness, and bilingual/multilingual families.
Where are you in the certification process and how will the scholarship help you?
I am a little over three years into my certification and in the final 6-12 months of the process. The scholarship will help with funds for my mentorship and certification exam study books.
What do you see as the future for children who are deaf and hard of hearing and using LSL?
I believe the community of families and children who are deaf and hard of hearing and using LSL will continue to grow. With early identification, implantation, and intervention, children with hearing loss using a LSL approach will have endless opportunities for learning, connection, and community.

¿Cómo acabó en este campo?
En la etapa de secundaria trabajé como voluntaria en la clínica multidisciplinaria pediátrica ambulatoria del hospital local para niños con necesidades especiales y discapacidades del desarrollo. También cuidé a una niña con autismo durante esta etapa de secundaria. ¡Pensaba que quería ser terapeuta ocupacional! Una vez decidida a cursar estudios superiores, conocí que en la Texas Christian University se ofrecía un programa de licenciatura en Fonoaudiología tan sobresaliente que me pareció que encajaba perfectamente con mis expectativas.
El trabajo en los veranos en la John Tracy Clinic y con mis mentores, incluida la Dra. Helen Morrison, PhD, CCC-AuD, LSLS, Cert. AVT, mientras estudiaba en la universidad, me hizo cambiar de opinión y me orientó hacia el trabajo con niños con pérdida auditiva y la Escucha y el Lenguaje Hablado (LSL).
Mis intereses de especialidad incluyen trabajar con niños con pérdida auditiva con CMV congénito, sordera unilateral y familias bilingües/multilingües.
¿En qué punto del proceso se encuentra y cómo le ayudará la beca?
Llevo algo más de tres años de certificación y me encuentro en los últimos 6-12 meses del proceso. La beca me ayudará a financiar la mentoría y los libros de estudio para el examen de certificación.
¿Como considera el futuro de los niños con sordera e hipoacusia que emplean el LSL?
VL: Creo que la comunidad de familias y niños con sordera e hipoacusia que utilizan el enfoque LSL seguirá creciendo. Con una identificación, una implantación y una intervención tempranas, los niños con pérdida auditiva que utilicen el enfoque LSL tendrán innumerables oportunidades de aprender, establecer contactos y comunicarse con la comunidad.
