A Step Ahead: Katharine’s Journey of Music

Thanks to AG Bell's Arts & Sciences scholarship, Katharine is learning Gaelic dance and guitar!

Lea en Español

Cape Breton, a small community located in Nova Scotia, Canada, has always been known for its deep appreciation for their Gaelic culture. This is what piqued Katherine’s interest in Sarah Doran’s step dance classes, which promote a deeper appreciation for music and culture.  At the Gaelic college summer camp, Katharine will gain the opportunity to learn many Gaelic traditions, from how to dance to Gaelic songs to fiddling. Katharine is especially excited about being able to learn the guitar.

This will not be the first time that Katharine has attended Sarah’s dance lessons, however. Doran has promoted Katharine’s avid love for both step dance and highland dance, both of which she enjoys performing with her friends. The social aspect of the camp is what also attracted her to the program. Katherine’s mom, Laura, confides that not only will the camp “help Katharine stay engaged in music year-round”, but also help her “develop friendships and social skills”, both of which hold unique challenges for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Katharine was diagnosed with hearing loss at 5 weeks old and promptly fitted for hearing aids. At 2 years of age, she received bilateral cochlear implants, and every day Katharine continues to develop her skills in Listening and Spoken Language.

Thanks to AG Bell’s Arts and Sciences Award, Katharine will be exposed to two new languages: Gaelic and music. Stories like hers pull at both the heart and guitar strings.

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 Arts & Sciences Award scholarship. Apply by February 16, 2026, to gain access to programs that help students participate in after-school, weekend or summer programs to enrich language and develop skills in the arts or sciences.
