When Charlie from Gloucestershire, UK, was diagnosed as profoundly deaf at two years old, doctors told his parents he wouldn’t hear even if a plane took off next to him. Now, at age 18, Charlie is a talented musician and tennis player who has played at Wimbledon and aims to represent Great Britain at the Deaflympics in Tokyo, Japan, later this year.

“Auditory-verbal therapy taught me never to give up, and I never have,” Charlie said. “I’ve already achieved my dream of playing tennis at Wimbledon and I’m hopeful that later this year I will be representing my country in Japan.”

Charlie’s parents were keen for him to learn to listen and talk after discovering he was deaf, and he had his cochlear implant surgery around a year after his diagnosis. The family then joined the auditory-verbal therapy program at Auditory Verbal UK (AVUK) in Oxford, England.

Charlie said, “Mum told me that I didn’t really have any speech before then and that I used to hide under the table rather than have to try and learn new words. But as well as teaching me how to make the most of my hearing, I was always encouraged to believe I could achieve more.”

AVUK’s family-centred therapy program is delivered by certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialists in Auditory-Verbal Therapy (LSLS Cert. AVT), and empowers parents and carers to develop their child’s listening, speaking, and social skills. Alongside supporting Listening and Spoken Language development, the charity aims to raise expectations of what is possible for deaf children and challenge outdated perceptions.

For Charlie, who was supported by LSLS Cert. AVTs Rosie and Susie at AVUK, this has meant discovering his love of music and he plays the piano, drums, violin, and viola, and has performed at the famous London Palladium.

His mom Emma said, “Auditory-verbal therapy gave the whole family the tools and techniques to use in everyday situations to develop Charlie’s listening and speech. It was always important to embed music and sport into Charlie’s life and development, and I know that these enrichment skills are allowing him to reach for the stars.”

At a Power of Speech event in 2018 showcasing the outcomes of auditory-verbal therapy in the Houses of Parliament, 11-year-old Charlie shared his hearing journey, explaining how the early language support has allowed him to do all the things his hearing peers can:

The talented musician’s other love has always been sport. He plays football and table tennis and has represented his school at cross country and discus. But it is tennis where he is excelling and at such a young age, he has already achieved a huge amount.

In September 2024, he retained both his junior singles and doubles titles at the UK National Deaf Tennis Championships. It is the fifth year in a row that he has won the singles competition and achieved this while Emma Raducanu, British number two, trained on the court next to him!

He’s now stepping up to the senior’s tennis competitions and is in contention for the Deaflympics in Tokyo, Japan, later this year after reaching the quarterfinals at the European Deaf Tennis Championships in Crete.

He has already fulfilled a dream by playing at Wimbledon, where he won two exhibition matches on the ‘Play Your Way to Wimbledon’ finals day. As an ambassador for Deaf Tennis, Charlie spoke with Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, at Queen’s Club in London, where they discussed equality in sport for all people, including those who are deaf.

Charlie is also sharing his tennis talent as a qualified Level 2 Lawn Tennis Association coach encouraging people of all ages and abilities to take to the courts – proving that deafness does not need to be a barrier to thriving in sport.

All of this has been achieved while studying hard at mainstream school and doing well academically. In September 2025, Charlie will be starting university studying Sports Management at one of the UK’s top ranked universities, Loughborough, which is renowned for its reputation in sports.

Charlie added, “I have always been encouraged to try anything and everything and know that being deaf is not a barrier to any of my dreams or ambitions. I’m so proud of what I have already achieved and know that it is thanks to my family and auditory-verbal therapy for the belief and confidence they gave me at such an early age.”

Currently only 10% of deaf children, like Charlie, can access auditory-verbal therapy in the UK, and AVUK are working to increase the numbers of certified LSLS therapists so more deaf children like Charlie can access trained practitioners trained. AVUK provides AG Bell-accredited training in auditory-verbal therapy to health and educational professionals both in the UK and across the world, with full remote learning available for both Foundation and Advanced courses.

Charlie’s fantastic achievements show what deaf children can achieve with early and effective support to develop language and communication in the critical first few years of their lives. And with so many brilliant opportunities ahead, we’re cheering Charlie on to ‘Ace’ his future in tennis and continue challenging misconceptions.

Your Way to Wimbledon» (Llega a Wimbledon a tu manera).
