September is National Deaf Awareness Month, and at AG Bell, we’re celebrating by shining a spotlight on the people who make our mission to empower individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, providing support for them to listen, speak, and thrive, possible.

We’re excited to introduce one of our newest team members: Gabby Morreale, Advocacy and Public Policy Consultant, who is helping lead the charge on AG Bell’s new AMPLIFY (Advocates Mobilizing for Policy, Leadership, Inclusion, Fairness, and You) Leaders initiative. AMPLIFY prepares advocacy leaders to be effective change agents at the local, regional, state, and national levels.

Tell us a bit about yourself!

My name is Gabby Morreale, and I’m AG Bell’s new Advocacy and Public Policy Consultant. I was born with severe to profound hearing loss and have been wearing hearing aids my whole life. I grew up in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Davidson College in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies. After graduation, I worked at Davidson’s Academic Access and Disability Resources Office as both an academic coach and program coordinator, where I created programs that promoted disability as identity, diversity, and community on campus. I’m currently back in Washington, D.C., and plan to attend law school to strengthen my disability advocacy work.

Where did your passion for advocacy come from?

Because of the excellent support I had growing up, I often thought of my disability as something to accommodate in school and public settings. But that changed when I took a class at Davidson called “Disability in Literature and Art,” which explored how disability is represented, intentionally or unintentionally, in creative mediums, and it completely transformed my perspective. I came to understand that my disability is not just an isolated aspect of my life, but something woven into the foundation of everything. I realized that my experience with hearing loss has informed my values, friendships, and the things that are important to me. My passion for disability advocacy came from wanting to give other disabled people the chance to see their disabilities in that way.

How did you first hear about AG Bell, and what inspired you to get involved?

Although I grew up in Washington, D.C., where AG Bell’s historic Volta Bureau office building is located, I didn’t learn about AG Bell until college. I had never come across a nonprofit that focused exclusively on rights for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing, and I was so excited to find one. Having benefitted from incredible resources and support throughout my childhood, I wanted to give back and help create those same opportunities for others. I interned with AG Bell before my senior year, and I’m thrilled to return as the Advocacy and Public Policy Consultant.

What excites you most about your new role?

Disability experiences are vast and complex. Like many people who are deaf and hard of hearing, I’ve often been the only one with my disability in a given space. In this role, I’m excited to engage with a wide range of experiences and perspectives. Those stories and insights will be invaluable in shaping stronger, more inclusive advocacy.

Looking ahead, what impact do you hope to make at AG Bell?

I often think about the individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing who came before me, many of whom were hidden away or written out of history. I hope that the work I do helps create a more visible, lasting record of our community, and something future individuals living with hearing loss can connect to and build on.

And just for fun, what’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I play both piano and flute! I grew up in a musical household, went to a piano camp in high school, and accompanied holiday concerts as the creative director of my high school’s Christmas concerts. I love classical music, and my absolute favorite piece of Christmas music is the entirety of Handel’s Messiah.

Stay tuned next month when we highlight our most tenured staff person, Robin Bailey!

Personal destacado: Gabby Morreale
