Meet Melissa Dodds: The 2025 Doreen Pollack LSLS Cert. AVT Scholarship

Congratulations to Melissa Dodds, the 2025 Doreen Pollack LSLS Cert. AVT Scholar.

AG Bell congratulates Melissa Dodds, M.S., CCC-SLP, on receiving the 2025 Doreen Pollack LSLS Cert. AVT scholarship. Melissa is a speech-language pathologist and early interventionist in Casper, Wyoming. She divides her work between providing direct speech and language services to families with young children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) and as the Wyoming Early Intervention Initiative Plus coordinator.

AG Bell and The Listen Foundation have established a professional scholarship in the name of Doreen Pollack, a pioneer in the standards of excellence in Listening and Spoken Language. This scholarship aims to assist LSLS professionals in fulfilling the requirements for certification as a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist (LSLS™) in Auditory-Verbal Therapy (LSLS Cert. AVT).

Volta Voices talked with Melissa about this honor.

What inspired you to enter into this field?

As a child of deaf adults (CODA), American Sign Language was actually my first language. That early exposure shaped everything for me. I started my career as a sign language interpreter but found myself wanting to work more directly with families and young children, which led me to become a speech-language pathologist.

The focus of my graduate capstone project at the University of Montana was on literacy interventions for children who are DHH. Through that experience, I began seeking out more information about Listening and Spoken Language and the impact it can have on a child’s overall trajectory. That project ultimately sparked my interest in pursuing LSLS certification and working more closely with children who are DHH in early intervention.

Today, I provide speech and language services through our local child development center for children ages birth to 5, and I also serve as the Wyoming Early Intervention Initiative Plus Coordinator, supporting families across Wyoming who have children who are DHH. Early intervention is where I feel the most profound impact can be made on a child’s development. It truly feels like my calling.

Why did you decide to pursue LSLS certification, and how will the scholarship assist you?

In Wyoming, families who choose Listening and Spoken Language often have very limited access to providers with the right kind of training. Many rely on out-of-state teletherapy. I decided to pursue LSLS certification because I want to help change that. My goal is to offer families local, high-quality support from someone who understands the unique challenges of raising a child with hearing loss in a rural state. The scholarship would help tremendously by covering the cost of mentorship hours, coursework, and certification requirements. It would make this process more manageable and allow me to bring this much-needed support to families in our state.

What do you see as the future for children who are deaf and hard of hearing and using Listening and Spoken Language?

What I love most about this work is being able to walk alongside families, especially in those early and sometimes overwhelming days after diagnosis, and help them feel more confident about their child’s future. I’ve seen how early, consistent support can completely shift a child’s path. Being part of that is incredibly rewarding.

The future is full of potential. When children who are DHH have access to early identification, appropriate technology, and consistent support from trained providers, they can develop strong language skills and thrive in their learning and social environments. I believe we’ll continue to see more families choosing Listening and Spoken Language and more children reaching their full potential with the right supports in place.

I also hope the field continues to focus on improving access, especially in rural and underserved areas. Every child deserves the opportunity to be heard, understood, and supported, no matter where they live.

Conozca a Melissa Dodds: Beca Doreen Pollack LSLS Cert. AVT 2025

AG Bell felicita a Melissa Dodds, M.S., CCC-SLP, por ser la destinataria de la Beca Doreen Pollack LSLS Cert. AVT. 2025.
