In Memoriam: Dr. Pat Stone

Remembering Dr. Pat Stone, a beloved friend and mentor.

Lea en Español

Dr. Patrick S. “Pat” Stone will be remembered for his loving heart and passion for improving the lives of children who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Dr. Stone was born on May 26, 1942, to deaf parents, which inspired his dedication to working as an educator teaching children who are deaf or hard of hearing. He spent over 30 years at Tucker Maxon School in Portland, Ore., where his work continues to influence educators and programs helping children who are deaf learn to listen and talk.

Many people in the AG Bell community may best remember Dr. Stone from a 1992 segment of 60 minutes where he was featured with a then 6-year-old Caitin Parton, one of the first children to receive a 22-channel cochlear implant device.

“To me, Pat Stone was a giant! I first saw Dr. Stone on 60 Minutes when he offered professional (as a teacher of the deaf and program administrator) and personal (as the son of deaf parents) perspective when interviewed by commentator Ed Bradley on a special that featured Caitlin Parton’s story about hearing through her cochlear implant and how she was thriving as one of the first children to be implanted with a 22-channel device,” said Gayla Guignard, AG Bell’s Chief Strategy & Programs Officer. “Pat explained that Caitlin was not the only child who had learned to listen, talk and excel because of cochlear implants, and that changing the world was something he hoped might put he and others eventually out of a job. Pat was brave as he always thought of others, was direct and told it like it was.”

Pat served on the AG Bell Board of Directors for many years, and as board president from 1992-1994. “Pat was a genuine sweetheart and one of the great friends I met through AG Bell,” said Ken Levinson, current AG Bell Board president. “He was above and beyond in his dedication that all children and their families have access to Listening and Spoken Language.”

Dr. Stone passed away in March 2024 and will be greatly missed by his family as well as the AG Bell community. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Tucker Maxon School, at www.tuckermaxon.org/contribute.

In Memoriam: Dr. Pat Stone
