From LOFTee to AG Bell Staff

Until high school, Emerson Henry had never met someone else with hearing loss. After LOFT, she joined AG Bell as a member and has become one of its newest staff!

Until she finished her sophomore year of high school, Emerson Henry had never met someone with hearing loss. After participating in AG Bell’s LOFT program in 2018, the bilateral cochlear implant user realized she was not alone. She joined AG Bell and became an active volunteer. And now she is AG Bell’s newest staff member!

Hearing Loss Journey

Emerson was diagnosed with hearing loss when she was around 1 1/2 years old. Her parents didn’t know that she was slowly losing her hearing. She was fitted with hearing aids and wore them until her right ear declined to the point where a hearing aid was no longer helping. At age 4, she received a cochlear implant in that ear. Immediately, her hearing improved, and she was singing songs right away. She received an implant in her left ear about a year later. “By the time I started kindergarten at age 6, I could read, knew all of the continents, and was a chatty child,” Emerson says.

Emerson has encountered challenges over the years, like missing opportunities to participate in after school activities due to speech therapy or time with her hearing resource teacher. But she knew she had to work harder in and out of class in order to succeed. Making friends was also challenging because many didn’t understand what she was dealing with. “I remember kids thinking that I was ignoring them when in reality I didn’t hear when they called my name or tried to talk to me.” Unfortunately, many adults also didn’t understand her daily hardships.

Emerson attended mainstream public schools and just graduated cum laude from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana with a bachelor’s in Elementary Education. While she was lucky to attend a small college with extra resources to help her succeed, Emerson says there were still people who didn’t understand her need for more time and support.

However, “while I faced these challenges, I never let them get to me,” she says. “I advocated for my success.” She calls out her teacher for the deaf, Joni Norris, who taught her how to advocate early on and told her she had the right to an equal education despite her hearing loss.

AG Bell Journey

Emerson and her fellow LOFT counselors enjoy a reception at The Volta Bureau.

In 2018, Emerson travelled to Washington, D.C., to participate in AG Bell’s acclaimed LOFT program. The experience spurred a realization: “I wanted to show other deaf or hard of hearing individuals that their hearing loss does not define who they are.” She has volunteered for AG Bell programs like Cradle to Career, LEAP, LOFT, Young Leaders Board, and the Bay Area LOFTee Alumni Group. “AG Bell is the perfect place to express the passion I have for LOFT and the deaf community,” the Danville, CA, resident says. Recently, she was an AG Bell intern, where she got to work behind the scenes of LOFT and help plan “an incredible week that I knew would change lives.”

Experiencing LOFT as a camper, counselor, and then a LOFT intern was “extremely special” to Emerson. She says the best part was seeing campers’ faces light up when they connected with other teens who understand what it is like to be deaf or hard of hearing.

A New Chapter

Emerson plans to move to the Washington, D.C., area sometime this year as she joins the AG Bell staff in September. Her role is still undetermined, but she is excited about it. Joining the AG Bell team has been a dream of hers ever since she attended LOFT. “AG Bell has touched my life in so many ways and now I get the chance to share my passion,” she says.

Armed with a can-do attitude since a young age, Emerson describes herself as strong, driven, organized, and outgoing. She doesn’t let anything get in the way of her goals and calls family and friends her strongest supporters.

When asked what advice she has for others with hearing loss, Emerson says, “Do not allow your hearing loss to interfere with your dreams and goals. You can do anything you set your mind to, even if it’s challenging and harder for you than others. Never be afraid to advocate and stand up for yourself. Take those opportunities because you never know where they will take you.”
