Powerful Parents: Promoting Informed Decision-Making Processes
(30-minute session)
We need to provide advice about early intervention choices that are family-centred and evidence based. This presentation will unpack informed decision-making and share advice from parents about fostering positive family outcomes. Participants will be provided with opportunities to reflect on practice and consider strategies to promote informed decision making for families.
By the end of this session, the learner will be able to:
- Review the FCEI:DHH Principles, and identify the EI Provider and parent activities and outcomes related to Principle 6—Family decisions: Decision-makers, culture and context, information, and adaptability.
- Discuss strategies to promote informed decision-making processes.
- Reflect on their own practice and set goals for future parent interactions.
Journeys: Supporting Diverse Families of DHH Children
(30-minute session)
This presentation features interviews of caregivers from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds who participated in Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) intervention. Caregivers will share challenges and suggestions for improving services. They will also discuss strategies that have been successful in supporting their child’s language development, increased their family’s engagement, and positively impacted their journey.
By the end of this session, the learner will be able to:
- Describe at least two specific challenges experienced by diverse families within an EHDI program.
- Identify the benefits of parent-to-parent support as reported by participants of the parent panel.
- Provide at least two examples of how DHH professionals can improve parent engagement, parental self-efficacy skills, and EHDI services.
