Going The Extra Mile for Leo’s Education

Thanks to AG Bell's Preschool Financial Aid program, Leo is able to attend a preschool that caters to his needs and language development!

The lack of socialization during COVID-19 interfered with everyone’s educational journey, and for Leo, it caused difficulties when his parents wanted him begin developing Listening and Spoken Language.

Leo was born with Usher Syndrome, which causes early vision loss and hearing loss. His family wasn’t new to this diagnosis however, since his older brother by four years, Luke, was also diagnosed with Ushers. The Listening and Spoken Language journey Luke successfully underwent convinced Leo’s parents to pursue the same with Leo.

Leo was fitted with two cochlear implants to help with his access to sound. As Leo’s father William put it, they believed spoken language would “give Leo the best chance at hearing and communication.” The only dilemma, however, was transitioning Leo from the sign language to spoken language, at a time when the world was transitioning to virtual learning.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, William shared how Leo “was not exposed to as many social environments as you would typically expect.” The brand of his cochlear implants, the Kanso 2, was also having technical difficulties. These two factors caused Leo to want to stay with sign language, and not to wear his cochlear implants since they were so touch and go. His parents tried to fix the problem by switching to the N7 cochlear implants instead, but they also knew Leo needed an extra push, and the educational environment of HOPE School what they needed.

The HOPE Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children prides itself on “early intervention and loving instruction in [a child’s] most developmental years”. The Listening and Spoken Language curriculum supported Leo in the direction his parents had always wanted for him, and now he not only wears his devices for several hours a day but even knows how to operate them and advocate for himself when they’re not working. His parents also attribute Leo’s quick transition to his Luke being a role model, since he learned how to use Listening and Spoken Language with his own cochlear implants much earlier.

Thanks to AG Bell’s Preschool Financial Aid program, his parents will be able to continue driving Leo to and from HOPE school, which is in another state. His father William believes that attending one more year at HOPE will help Leo “bridge the gap to be successful at the next school he attends.”

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 Preschool Financial Aid program, which helps families of children from age 4 until they begin first grade with expenses including auditory support services, speech-language therapy, preschool tuition, etc. Apply by June 8, 2026, to support your child’s Listening and Spoken Language journey.
