Not Afraid to Stand Out—Lila’s Endless Self Confidence

Thanks to AG Bell's School-Age scholarship, Lila is thriving at Norwood—earning top grades, embracing languages and sports, and confidently educating others about her hearing loss with standout self-assurance.

Lila has always been multi-faceted, so when she performed a presentation that featured the topics of history, technology, and her individual story, her father knew she was more than capable. Lila recently had the opportunity to share a PowerPoint discussion of the history of hearing aids, technological advancements, their purpose, and her own journey with them. This presentation more than proved to Michael Silver, Lila’s father, that Lila excels in “owning her hearing loss, and is comfortable talking about it and educating her peers.”

Lila was diagnosed with bilateral Mondini dysplasia and enlarged vestibular aqueducts (EVA), which results in mild-to-moderate hearing loss in both ears. After her diagnosis at 4 years old, Lila was immediately fitted with two hearing aids and began her Listening and Spoken Language journey. She now attends Norwood School in Maryland and does extremely well in a mainstream setting. Her father recently shared how not only does Lila get straight A’s, but she most recently was placed in pre-algebra, the school’s highest math track! However, STEM subjects aren’t the only ones Lila succeeds in.

To properly prepare for her upcoming bar mitzvah, Lila has been taking weekly Hebrew tutoring. At Norwood School, she is also becoming significantly more proficient in Spanish with each passing day. Norwood also promotes youth athleticism, with Lila taking part in JV Basketball for the first time and claiming that she thoroughly enjoys the program due to the coaches being “so kind and loving.”

With all of these accomplishments at just middle-school age, Lila certainly stands out from the crowd. Her grade 6 advisor and social studies teacher, Victoria Wilbur, noticed Lila’s strengths. She remarks, “middle schoolers shy away from being different. Lila, however, embraces her differences.”

Thanks to the School-Age Financial Aid scholarship, Lila will continue to embrace her differences in the best way imaginable.

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 School-Age Financial Aid scholarship. Apply by April 13, 2026, to support your child’s educational journey at parochial, independent, or traditional private schools.
