Audibility Over Everything: Real-World Access for Real-World Kids
Presenter: Lisa Park, Au.D., CCC-A , University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (United States)

Instructional Level: Basic

This keynote presentation will promote a non-denominational, “audibility first” mindset in pediatric hearing care. Participants will learn to counsel parents around audibility rather than device type, recognize the risks of incomplete access, and apply verification methods rooted in speech acoustics to ensure technology choices are always driven by real-world listening outcomes.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how a non-denominational, “audibility first” approach guides technology decisions for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, regardless of device type.
  • Identify the risks to spoken language development when audibility is incomplete or inappropriate, and recognize red flags in clinical practice.
  • Integrate counseling strategies, verification methods, and speech acoustics principles to ensure families and providers prioritize audibility above technology allegiance.

Letting Audibility Lead in Technology Decisions
Presenter: Kathryn Wiseman, Au.D., Ph.D., CCC-A , Boys Town National Research Hospital (United States)

Instructional Level: Intermediate

This short presentation will discuss using an “audibility-first” mindset when making more challenging decisions about technology type. Participants will learn about using audibility metrics to center discussions and decisions about technology candidacy and management for clinicians and families.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how audibility metrics support clinical decision-making about technology type.
  • Identify ways to stay “non-denominational” when considering technology type.
  • Explain how to frame discussions about technology changes with families and other professionals using an “audibility-first” approach.

Audibility Comes First: Moving the EHDI Needle
Presenter: Caitlin Sapp, Au.D., Ph.D., CCC-A, UNC Medical Center- Audiology (United States)

Instructional Level: Intermediate

This short presentation will consider the 10,000-foot view of early hearing loss identification and intervention in the EHDI system. Participants will orient an audibility-first approach in service of family-centered goals for language and literacy development in this system. A variety of cases will be used to illustrate this approach.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the risk of variable management recommendations across clinics for children with hearing loss.
  • Identify the benefits of a “non-denominational” identity in pediatric audiology.
  • Summarize the multiple opportunities to ground parent counseling in the principles of audibility to form a cohesive and consistent message.

Speech Sound Acoustics: Audibility Really Matters
Presenter: Donald Goldberg, Ph.D., CCC-SLP/A, LSLS Cert. AVT , College of Wooster/Cleveland Clinic Foundation (United States)

Instructional Level: Intermediate

This presentation will provide foundational information about the physics of sound, the acoustics of vowels and consonants, and review speech perception measures to illustrate how audibility for children who are deaf and hard of hearing truly matters. A discussion and case studies will follow to further emphasize the foundational knowledge.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the fundamentals of the physical characteristics of sound.
  • Describe the acoustics of vowels and consonants and their application to audiograms.
  • Explain several speech perception measures and the acoustics of measures, and their application to audibility for children with hearing loss.

Beyond the Device: Family-Engagement for Optimal Audibility
Presenter:  Jenna Voss, PhD, LSLS Cert. AVEdButler University (United States)

Instructional Level: Basic

A deaf child’s success with hearing technology relies on integration into real life through active family-engagement. This session highlights collaborative strategies for professionals to engage families in creating optimal listening environments and ensuring consistent audibility—positioning technology as a part of an ongoing process to improve outcomes for children who are deaf and hard of hearing.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify strategies for effectively engaging families in the use of hearing technology, fostering collaboration between professionals and families to optimize real-world audibility outcomes for children with hearing loss.
  • Explain the unique and collaborative roles of professionals and families in achieving successful outcomes with hearing technology, shifting from a “failure” to an “audibility as success” mindset.
  • Illustrate how to proactively address common family challenges related to hearing technology by offering appropriate communication, resources, and support.
