AG Bell is thrilled to announce that the 2026 AG Bell Global Listening and Spoken Language Symposium will return live and in person in Washington, D.C., June 4-6, 2026. After years of connecting from a distance, we’re coming together again to share knowledge, strengthen skills, and celebrate the power of Listening and Spoken Language. “Together Again: Making Every Sound Count reflects our shared commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to hear, learn, and thrive through access to sound and qualified hearing health professionals.
Trudy Smith, Jane Madell, and Lilian Flores have been busy planning a program that celebrates a return to meeting together and provides opportunity to offer an on-demand version as well for those who cannot travel to Washington, D.C. Read on to learn more about this exciting 2026 event!
Why did you agree to participate as co-chair of this year’s education advisory panel?
Trudy: It’s always an honour to serve as part of the AG Bell Symposium co-chair team. I was genuinely thrilled to be invited back for a third time to help shape the 2026 event. I’m also delighted to be collaborating with long-time friends and colleagues, Jane and Lillian. As a lifelong learner, I gain so much joy from designing meaningful learning experiences for others—experiences that inevitably enrich my own practice. Being a co-chair truly energizes me.
Jane: The AG Bell Symposium is my favorite meeting. It is the only meeting that gathers all the people interested in children and adults with hearing loss: audiologists, speech-language pathologists, teachers of the deaf, LSL Specialists, families of people with hearing loss, and children with hearing loss. It is a very important meeting, and I am happy to help in any way I can.
Lilian: I was honored to accept the co-chair role, especially since this is our triumphant return to an in-person format. After several years online, I saw a critical opportunity to help shape a program that maximizes the value of face-to-face interaction—fostering deep discussions, hands-on demonstrations, and the kind of personal networking that our field needs to advance.
The Symposium is returning as an in-person event for the first time since 2019. What are you most excited about as we return to meeting together again?
Lilian: I’m most excited about the spontaneous, unscheduled networking. Online events are structured, but the real magic happens in the hallway conversations, during lunch breaks, and at the social meetings. These moments are crucial for building mentorships, launching collaborations, and sharing candid clinical insights that often don’t make it into a formal presentation. That personal connection drives professional growth.
Jane: Meeting in person with colleagues and families is so wonderful. We can talk to and learn from each other.
Trudy: Honestly? I can’t wait to see and hug friends I’ve only connected with online for years—and to finally meet, in person, the wonderful colleagues I’ve come to know through our virtual events (and yes, I plan to hug them too!).
What is your favorite element of the Symposium each year?
Trudy: While I absolutely love the learning that takes place, it’s the conversations and connections that make the Symposium truly special. Hearing about new programs, resources, and innovations from around the world—and then diving deeper into those ideas after the sessions—enriches my practice every time. I always walk away with new insights, tips, and tools.
Jane: I love the science presentations and learning new things. Even after 60 years in this profession, there are still things to learn.
Lilian: This Symposium is unique because it brings together audiologists, speech-language pathologists, educators, and researchers. My favorite moments are the panels or informal discussions where these different disciplines share their perspectives. This collaboration is crucial for developing the holistic, family-centered care models that are the gold standard for individuals with hearing loss.
What new program details are you hoping to implement this year?
Trudy: We’re excited to build in more opportunities for real-time interaction—activities, discussions, challenges, and shared moments that make being together in person so powerful. You told us you wanted an in-person experience, and we’re designing the three-day program to maximize engagement, connection, and community.
Lilian: I would like to continue what has already begun, years ago, which is the internationalization of Spanish-speaking countries. This includes establishing inter-institutional research projects, publishing, and training programs for professionals who wish to become certified. I hope to create a collaborative environment together with colleagues to develop ideas that use technology to close healthcare disparities and reach more countries, globally.
Why should someone who hasn’t attended the Symposium before register this year to attend?
Jane: I really believe this is the best meeting in the field of hearing loss. I love meeting colleagues with different areas of expertise. It is an amazing opportunity to learn and enjoy.
Lilian: This Symposium is the most comprehensive single source for cutting-edge, actionable knowledge in the field. Instead of piecing together professional development from various sources, a newcomer will spend three days absorbing the latest advances in audiology, rehabilitation, and technology. They will accelerate their learning curve and leave ready to implement new, evidence-based practices.
As the first in-person event since 2019, the atmosphere will be unmatched. This is the moment to integrate into the AG Bell community.

¿Por qué aceptó participar como copresidenta del panel asesor educativo de este año?

Estos momentos son cruciales para establecer mentorías, iniciar colaboraciones y compartir observaciones clínicas francas que a menudo no se incluyen en una presentación formal. Esta conexión personal impulsa el crecimiento profesional.
Jane: Reunirme en persona con colegas y familias me parece maravilloso. Podemos hablar y aprender unos de otros.
Trudy: ¿La verdad? Estoy deseando ver y abrazar a amigos con los que solo he conectado en línea durante años y conocer por fin en persona a otros colegas estupendos que he conocido a través de nuestros eventos virtuales (¡y sí, también pienso abrazarlos!).
¿Cuál es su elemento preferido del Simposio cada año?
Trudy: Aunque me encanta el aprendizaje que tiene lugar, son las conversaciones y las conexiones las que hacen que el Simposio sea realmente especial. Conocer nuevos programas, recursos e innovaciones de todo el mundo —y profundizar en esas ideas después de las sesiones— siempre enriquece mi práctica. Siempre salgo con nuevas ideas, consejos y herramientas.
Jane: Me encantan las presentaciones científicas y aprender cosas nuevas. Incluso después de 60 años en esta profesión, todavía hay cosas que aprender.
Lilian: Este Simposio es único porque congrega a audiólogos, fonoaudiólogos, logopedas, educadores e investigadores. Nos dijeron que deseaban una experiencia presencial y estamos diseñando el programa de tres días para maximizar la participación, la conexión y la comunidad.
Lilian: Me gustaría continuar con lo que ya se inició hace años, que es la internacionalización de los países hispanohablantes. Esto incluye el establecimiento de proyectos de investigación interinstitucionales, publicaciones y programas de formación para profesionales que deseen obtener la certificación. Espero crear un entorno colaborativo junto con mis colegas para desarrollar ideas en las que se utilice la tecnología para reducir las desigualdades en la atención sanitaria y llegar a más países a escala mundial.
¿Por qué debería inscribirse este año alguien que nunca haya asistido al Simposio?
Jane: Creo sinceramente que se trata del mejor congreso en el campo de la pérdida auditiva. Me encanta conocer a colegas con diferentes áreas de especialización. Es una oportunidad extraordinaria para aprender y disfrutar.
Lilian: Este simposio es la fuente más completa de conocimientos innovadores y aplicables en el campo. En lugar de recurrir a múltiples fuentes para su desarrollo profesional, quien asista por primera vez pasará tres días absorbiendo los últimos avances en audiología, rehabilitación y tecnología. Acelerará su curva de aprendizaje y saldrá preparado para poner en práctica nuevas prácticas basadas en la evidencia.
Al ser el primer evento presencial desde 2019, el ambiente será incomparable. Este es el momento de integrarse en la comunidad de AG Bell.
