More than 160 professionals, parents and deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) individuals from around the world gathered November 27-29 for the World Hearing Forum (WHF) Stakeholders’ Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. Emilio Alonso-Mendoza and Gayla H. Guignard were excited to represent AG Bell during three days of discussion and planning to increase the work of the WHF in enabling ear and hearing care for all.

“The world has changed for children who are deaf and hard of hearing,” said Alonso-Mendoza. “We were pleased to share how AG Bell is supporting these children as they learn to listen and talk, as well as make valuable connections to create new partnerships and improve access to hearing technology and therapies in countries around the world.”

Alonso-Mendoza reminds attendees of Alexander Graham Bell’s connection to helping those with hearing loss during a panel discussion.

Some of the key takeaways from the meeting included recognizing that hearing health must be integrated into primary health care to effectively serve the world’s 8 billion+ population; understanding how hearing loss is perceived socially, including negative perceptions of hearing technology and a stigma associated with someone who is DHH; and increasing involvement in the WHF workstreams will bring awareness of hearing loss and more effective change through campaigns like World Hearing Day.

“We were able to share with the group that World Hearing Day falls on Alexander Graham Bell’s birthday, which recognizes the shared goals of increasing awareness of hearing loss while improving the lives of those who live with hearing loss,” added Alonso-Mendoza.

“I was thrilled to be a part of such an amazing group of people and engage in rich and inspiring conversation,” said Guignard. “I look forward to participating in the working groups organized by the World Health Organization to carry the momentum of this meeting forward into practical and far-reaching global solutions.”
