This past year was, to say the least, not a normal one for students of any age. But for our graduates, milestones still come whether there’s a pandemic or not. Once again, as our high school, college and graduate school students celebrate their accomplishments, AG Bell recognizes their achievements through the AG Bell Yearbook.

The AG Bell yearbook was created as a way to not only commemorate these graduates and their unique stories, but also to develop a network to connect them to future graduates and those uncertain of their future, whether it be career-related, college-related or to parents of younger children who are still at the beginning of their Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) journeys.

This year, we celebrate a large number of students graduating around the world in a very unprecedented year of the pandemic, where “typical” was unrecognizable to anyone. Yet, they still persevered.

“If there is anyone who can conquer anything, it’s our LSL youth,” says Lisa Chutjian, AG Bell’s chief development officer. “We are so proud of all they have accomplished, and even in a pandemic.”

Here are just a few of our graduates.

Ayla Soofi, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Graduated from Community High School

“I am most proud of being on the Varsity Tennis team and a mentor for younger deaf and hard of hearing students. I am also proud of my artistic abilities, my friends and family, and getting into three of my top four colleges.”

Elias Wojahn, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Graduated from University of Minnesota

“In the past 4 years, I tried a lot of new things and met so many wonderful people. I tried a new sport, studied abroad in Bergen, Norway, and joined multiple student groups. Not only did all of this enrich my time at the University of Minnesota, it helped me develop into a better version of myself. I gained a lot of confidence and greatly improved my advocacy skills.”

Sophia Schlager, New Orleans, Louisiana

Graduated from Tulane University

“I’m most proud of how I really took advantage of every opportunity I could, and threw myself into the college experience, the TU community, and the culture in New Orleans. I’ve gained invaluable relationships, lessons, and experiences that not only helped me grow as a person but that I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

Shihao Sophia Bao, Beijing, China

Graduated from Dulwich College Beijing

“I plan to make more coding projects and study more in the field of STEM + medical science. I hope I could go to a University that is strong in these areas in the future.”

Ayla Soofi, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Sophia Schlager, Nueva Orleans, Luisiana

Shihao Sophia Bao, Beijing, China
