This presentation introduces parents to how artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies can support communication, learning, and daily living for children with hearing loss. It highlights practical tools and resources that empower families and enhance the overall quality of life for their children.

By the end of this session, parents will: 

  • Describe the foundational concepts of AI and its relevance to children with hearing loss.
  • List AI tools and apps that support communication and language development.
  • Analyze ways in which AI and other disruptive technology can enhance educational access and learning opportunities for children with hearing loss.
  • Identify technologies that assist in daily living, communication, and safety.
  • Demonstrate the ability to evaluate technologies that align with a family’s specific needs and goals.

K. Todd Houston, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT, is a Professor in the School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the University of Akron (Akron, OH), where he has dedicated his career to advancing the fields of speech-language pathology, auditory-verbal therapy/listening & spoken language, and telepractice. Since 1996, he has been a Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist (Cert. AVT) and has worked extensively to support children with hearing loss in developing listening and spoken language skills. Beyond academia, Dr. Houston has held leadership roles that have shaped the profession. From 2002 to 2007, he served as Executive Director and CEO of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, an international organization advocating for listening and spoken language approaches for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. More recently, he was the CEO of 3C Digital Media.
