On June 26 to 28, an international community of people from 43 countries participated in the AG Bell Global Listening and Spoken Language Virtual Symposium. For the fifth year in a row, attendees came together in a virtual learning environment to hear from leaders in the field of listening and spoken language (LSL) and improve their own knowledge about best practices.
“As the global reach of Listening and Spoken Language continues to grow, the Symposium stands as a leading provider of valuable learning and networking opportunities for professionals around the world,” said Emilio Alonso-Mendoza, CEO of Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell). “These professionals are eager to learn as much as they can to help children in their countries gain Listening and Spoken Language skills. We are excited to be a part of their journey to impact so many children and families all over the world.”
A Call to Action
This year’s theme, “Amplifying Voices Worldwide,” was a call to action. Every perspective and every story matters, and AG Bell is committed to ensuring that each voice is not just heard, but magnified. Participants engaged through panel discussions, interactive workshops, and inspiring keynote speakers to gain valuable information on how to grow language and learning opportunities in their own countries and practices.
The biggest draw to this year’s Symposium remained the education program, the variety of presentation styles and topics, and the reputations of the presenters themselves. From NIH-funded keynote presentations to lunchtime conversations, there was a little bit of everything for attendees to enjoy.
“I appreciated how timely and intriguing all the topics were overall. Having started in this field in 1998, it was incredible to reflect on where it all was, where it is now, and the inspiring possibilities of where we all will go,” one attendee reflected on the experience.
“Honestly, this has been one of the best symposiums I’ve attended…Amazing presenters talking about relevant and interesting topics! All applicable to daily practice,” noted another attendee.
“I liked how all research on the various topics discussed is able to be accelerated by the information shared worldwide from various research groups,” said one attendee.
Other attendees were quick to praise the presenters and global perspectives: “The quality of the presenters was great…it’s always so nice to see such passionate and competent professionals helping families and their children with hearing loss,” one attendee added.
“There was a harmonious blend of a variety of subjects addressing global concerns, inclusive of global perspectives,” stated another.
Genetics and Hearing Loss
An emerging topic and one surrounded by potentially confusing and incorrect information is genetics, genetic testing, and hearing loss. To address this timely issue, AG Bell added a bonus third-day forum bringing in global experts to discuss the impact of genetic testing on hearing loss.
Attendees were quick to give high praise to the forum and information provided. “I appreciate AG Bell being very proactive and taking leadership on generating awareness of genetics of hearing loss, genetic testing, and ongoing clinical studies,” said one attendee.
“The genetics forum was insightful and relevant,” added another.
“I enjoyed all the sessions, but the genetic forum was the icing on the cake,” one attendee exclaimed.
As this topic is constantly evolving, and clarity is important, AG Bell is pleased to offer the forum as part of the Symposium, or as a stand-alone event during its On Demand Symposium July 24-September 30.
Connecting with Colleagues from Around the World
This year’s Symposium continued to provide opportunities for global learning and engagement. Many attendees commented that the international representation was a highlight for them.
“There was great cultural diversity, not only in the audience but also among the speakers, and I liked how cultural diversity was addressed in many presentations,” specified one attendee.
Others appreciated how the virtual platform opened doors for so many to learn and gain valuable tools to help children in their own countries. “It’s exciting to know that people from all over the world can participate. The international representation on the planning committee, presenters, and panelists was great,” one attendee commented.
We offer captioning of all sessions in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese. The ability to communicate presentations in multiple languages increases opportunities for people all over the world to learn more about LSL development and best practices. As one attendee noted, “How lucky we are to have a virtual Symposium that can reach so many diverse individuals who have one shared goal.”
Symposium Sessions Will Be Available On Demand
One of the main benefits of a virtual program is the ability to record and offer sessions to all attendees.

The recorded sessions will be available to view through the Symposium’s online learning platform, and registrants can earn up to 3.8 (38) continuing education credits (CEUs) for the AG Bell Academy, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and the American Academy of Audiology (AAA). Those who registered for and/or attended the live Symposium will also have access to the On Demand sessions at no additional cost. Amplificando las voces en todo el mundo
Del 26 al 28 de junio, una comunidad internacional de personas procedentes de 43 países participó en el Simposio Global Virtual de AG Bell de Escucha y Lenguaje Hablado. Por quinto año consecutivo, los asistentes se reunieron en un entorno de aprendizaje virtual para aprender de la mano de los líderes en el campo de la Escucha y Lenguaje Hablado (LSL, por sus siglas en inglés) y mejorar sus conocimientos sobre las mejores prácticas.

Un llamamiento a la acción
El lema de este año, «Amplificando las voces en todo el mundo», fue un llamamiento a la acción. Cada perspectiva, cada historia es importante, y AG Bell se ha comprometido a garantizar que cada voz no solo se escuche, sino que se amplifique. Los asistentes participaron en mesas redondas y talleres interactivos, además de escuchar a excelentes ponentes y obtener información valiosa sobre cómo incrementar las oportunidades de aprendizaje del lenguaje en sus propios países y en la práctica.
El mayor atractivo del Simposio de este año ha seguido siendo el programa educativo, la variedad de estilos y temas de presentación, y la reputación de los propios ponentes. Desde presentaciones magistrales financiadas por los NIH hasta conversaciones a la hora del almuerzo, hubo un poco de todo para que los asistentes disfrutaran.
«He apreciado lo oportunos e interesantes que han sido todos los temas en general. Habiendo empezado en este campo en 1998, ha sido una gran oportunidad poder reflexionar sobre la situación en el pasado y en el presente, además de las inspiradoras posibilidades que nos deparará el futuro», aseguró un asistente sobre la experiencia.
«Sinceramente, este ha sido uno de los mejores simposios a los que he asistido… ¡Ponentes extraordinarios hablando de temas relevantes e interesantes! Y todo aplicable a la práctica diaria», señaló otro asistente.
«Me ha gustado que toda la investigación sobre los diversos temas tratados se pueda acelerar gracias a la información compartida en todo el mundo por diversos grupos de investigación», afirmó otro.
Otros asistentes no dudaron en elogiar a los ponentes y las perspectivas globales: «La calidad de los ponentes fue excelente… siempre es agradable conocer a profesionales con tanto entusiasmo y tan competentes prestando ayuda a las familias y a sus hijos con pérdida auditiva», añadió otro asistente.
«Había una armoniosa mezcla de temas variados en los que se abordaban inquietudes globales, incluidas perspectivas globales», afirmó otro.
Genética y pérdida auditiva
Un tema emergente y rodeado de información potencialmente confusa e incorrecta es la genética, las pruebas genéticas y la pérdida auditiva. Para abordar este tema tan oportuno, AG Bell añadió un foro adicional el tercer día, en el que expertos de todo el mundo debatieron el impacto de las pruebas genéticas en la pérdida auditiva.
Los asistentes mostraron su satisfacción por el foro y la información facilitada. «Agradezco a AG Bell su proactividad y liderazgo a la hora de concienciar sobre la genética de la pérdida auditiva, las pruebas genéticas y los estudios clínicos en curso», afirmó uno de los asistentes.
«El foro sobre genética fue esclarecedor y relevante», añadió otro asistente.
«Me gustaron todas las sesiones, pero el foro sobre genética fue la guinda del pastel», exclamó otro.
Dado que este tema se encuentra en constante evolución y que la claridad es importante, AG Bell se complace en ofrecer el foro como parte del Simposio, o como un evento independiente, durante su Simposio Bajo Demanda del 24 de julio al 30 de septiembre.
Conectarse con colegas de todo el mundo
El Simposio de este año siguió ofreciendo oportunidades para el aprendizaje y el compromiso globales. Muchos asistentes comentaron que la representación internacional fue, en su opinión, uno de los aspectos más destacados.
«Había una gran diversidad cultural, no solo entre el público sino también entre los ponentes, y me gustó la forma en que se abordó la diversidad cultural en muchas presentaciones», comentó uno de los asistentes.
Otros apreciaron cómo la plataforma virtual había abierto las puertas para que tantas personas aprendieran y obtuvieran valiosas herramientas para ayudar a los niños en sus propios países. «Es emocionante saber que puede participar gente de todo el mundo. La representación internacional en el comité de planificación, los ponentes y los panelistas fue extraordinaria», apuntó otro asistente. Se ofrecieron subtítulos de todas las sesiones en varios idiomas, entre ellos, inglés, español, portugués y japonés. La capacidad de trasmitir presentaciones en varios idiomas incrementó las oportunidades de que personas de todo el mundo conocieran mejor el desarrollo del enfoque LSL, así como las mejores prácticas. Como señaló uno de los asistentes: «Qué afortunados somos de tener un Simposio virtual que puede llegar a tantas personas diversas que tienen un objetivo común».
Las sesiones del Simposio estarán disponibles bajo demanda
Una de las principales ventajas de un programa virtual es la posibilidad de grabar y ofrecer las sesiones a todos los asistentes.
«Con el éxito de nuestro quinto Simposio virtual, tenemos clara la dirección para ofrecer más oportunidades de aprendizaje a tantas personas que buscan obtener información valiosa y adquirir las habilidades necesarias para ayudar a los niños y a las familias de todo el mundo», aseguró Gayla Guignard, directora de Estrategia de AG Bell. «Mantenemos nuestro compromiso de ofrecer oportunidades educativas interesantes, relevantes y enriquecedoras para los profesionales de todo el mundo a través de la programación de aprendizaje virtual actual y futura».
Independientemente del lugar del mundo donde resida, seguirá teniendo la oportunidad de aprender las mejores prácticas en el campo de LSL, una información que se puede aplicar fácil y directamente a la práctica. Y lo podrá hacer en su propio horario, desde la comodidad de su hogar. «Agradezco muchísimo poder asistir de esta manera, así que gracias por hacerlo disponible tanto bajo demanda como online», comentó un asistente.
Otro asistente exclamó: «Espero cada año que se celebre el congreso y nunca me decepciona. Merece la pena cada centavo y me siento muy agradecido por haber podido asistir. Estoy deseando aprender más cuando estén disponibles las sesiones bajo demanda. ¡Gracias!».
La versión Bajo Demanda del Simposio estará disponible del 24 de julio al 30 de septiembre. Las sesiones grabadas estarán disponibles a través de la plataforma de aprendizaje online del Simposio y las personas inscritas podrán obtener hasta 3,8 (38) créditos de educación continua (CEU) de la AG Bell Academy, la American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) y la American Academy of Audiology (AAA).
