AG Bell Intern Reflections: A Summer of Support

Every year, AG Bell hosts a number of college-aged interns who receive hands-on experience learning how a nonprofit organization works. These are their reflections on the impact working for AG Bell has on their future careers and education.

This summer I helped design social media campaigns and create marketing materials, and also helped prepare for one of AG Bell’s annual events to raise awareness and engagement across the community. Something that surprised me during this internship was how much strategy goes into nonprofit communications.

I initially thought that social media and marketing were mainly about creating engaging content, but there’s so much attention that needs to be given with regards to accessibility, consistency, and supporting AG Bell’s mission. I also learned how much goes into organizing each event, and seeing the impact that this can have on families, professionals, and the wider community was beyond what I ever imagined. This internship strengthened both my creative and professional skills and showed me how communications can create meaningful, positive change.

As an intern, I helped prepare the necessary materials for the LOFT summer program at AG Bell. I learned how AG Bell is a tight-knit community, and that pleasantly surprised me. On my first day, everyone was so welcoming. The AG Bell staff were bright, lively, and personable with us interns and one another.

I also learned that AG Bell has a variety of programs and committees within the organization. I now know much more about the AG Bell Young Leaders Network and LOFT participants and their families. I have learned what it means to be in community with others at AG Bell. I worked very closely with the other interns and we always ate lunch together! Sometimes we would take walks together before heading back to the office. I can say that overall, I have had a lovely time at AG Bell.

I worked on the certification team for the AG Bell Academy, doing things like email outreach and data aggregation to help Listening and Spoken Language Specialists earn and maintain their professional certification.

The thing that surprised me the most during my time at AG Bell was the closeness one gets from working at a small nonprofit. Because AG Bell is a smaller team, I felt it was much easier to become personally invested in the work and in the advancement of the association’s goals. Even as an intern, I was able to personally interact with professionals in the field and see the impact of my work. Further, I was surprised by just how welcoming and encouraging the staff were, especially with this being my first internship. Everyone on the team is genuinely invested in the interns having a successful experience, and this tight-knit feel just couldn’t happen at a bigger organization or company.

While interning this summer, with the Leadership Opportunities for Teens (LOFT) program at AG Bell, I collaborated with my fellow interns to prepare for the upcoming LOFT program by completing hands-on tasks and organizing information to make sure LOFT runs smoothly.

Something I learned during my internship with AG Bell that surprised me is the amount of behind-the-scenes preparation that goes into making sure programs, such as LOFT, run smoothly. I previously understood that all programs required background work to function, but I hadn’t realized the extent of preparation that must happen in advance. One way this was seen was through the attention to detail to ensure participates had the best experience possible and everything runs smoothly. As a team, we made sure each task was reviewed at least twice.

Our small team allowed me to feel understood on a personal level. If I ever had any questions, I felt comfortable turning to anyone for clarification. Our tasks also demonstrated the importance of team unity. Although my fellow interns and I worked independently on tasks, working as a team ensured that each task was completed thoroughly and accurately. AG Bell showed me the importance of support, whether it be supporting those positively impacted by LOFT or supporting us, the interns, while we learned what it meant to be represent AG Bell’s mission.

As an intern at AG Bell, I was involved with the preparation, coordination, and planning of the LOFT summer program for high schoolers. Throughout the summer, as I learned more about LOFT and prepared for it, I was surprised by how much behind-the-scenes work and intentionality from the AG Bell staff go into the program, and how much that contributes to its success and helps ensure it runs smoothly. No matter how small the task, it was rewarding to know the cause it was going towards: a fun and engaging summer experience for high school teens who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Further, I learned how essential communication is throughout this process, and how good communication and collaboration with my fellow interns and AG Bell staff not only assists in putting on the LOFT program, but also enhances my overall intern experience. I am grateful for this opportunity to learn about the inner workings of a nonprofit, as well as for the welcoming, encouraging, and supportive environment it provided.

Nuestro equipo reducido me permitió sentirme comprendida a nivel personal.
