Speaking on her Spoken Language Journey—Sophie’s Journey in Advocacy

Thanks to AG Bell's School-Age scholarship, Sophie is turning her hearing loss journey into a powerful voice—thriving at Providence, leading with kindness, and inspiring others through fearless advocacy.

Sophie’s mother knew that Sophie felt comfortable about her hearing loss journey, but nothing could prepare her for how proud she was when Sophie stepped up to the mic and shared this journey with others.

When Oticon Medical invited the Gaddy’s to Family Advocacy Weekend, Sophie rose to the occasion in beautiful fashion. Sophie’s mother, Janeth, shared that when it was Sophie’s turn to speak, “she took the microphone, smiled, addressed the audience and gave the cliff notes of her story since birth.” The speech’s most powerful message was when Sophie said that “her success is not defined by her hearing loss, but by what she could do with it.”

Sophie was diagnosed at birth with bilateral microtia atresia, which resulted in moderate-to-severe conductive hearing loss in both ears. At 4 months old, Sophie was fitted with hearing aids, and she continues to excel using Listening and Spoken Language, most recently attending Providence High School.

Providence High School has provided a welcoming and warm environment, and one that pushes Sophie to her fullest potential. Not only does Sophie thrive in advanced academics, but she has also been a member of the school’s volleyball, dance, choir, and track teams. When families are welcomed into the Providence community, they are also greeted by Sophie, who volunteers as a welcome ambassador and provides school tours.

Although Sophie is involved in such a high array of activities, those around her recall most her overwhelming capacity to advocate for causes she believes in. Janeth describes her daughter as “a strong woman motivated by her desire to make a difference in the world and at the same time help others”.

Thanks to the School-Age Financial Aid scholarship, Sophie will continue to find her voice and speak on her hearing loss journey.

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 School-Age Financial Aid scholarship. Apply by April 13, 2026, to support your child’s educational journey at parochial, independent, or traditional private schools.
