Jetting Away to Jettway: Leonel’s Rocking Summer

Lionel is using his Arts & Sciences award to rock across America with his band.

Lea en Español

The technology behind music has always been interesting for Leonel. So, when he got invited with other elite musical students to form bands and perform across the country, he knew he had to attend the Jettway Summer Program.

Leonel was diagnosed with progressive hearing loss at just 3 years old. He was originally fitted with hearing aids at age 4 and has since learned Listening and Spoken Language as well as American Sign Language (ASL). His diagnosis hasn’t stopped him from channeling his creative side. Through the Jettway Summer program, he will finally get the chance to perform with the guitar, as well as gain a background in music and set design.

The Jettway Performance Summer Tour hosts selected Jettway music students and books venues across the country for group performances. The students spend the months prior to summer picking bands, rehearsing with instructors, and forming setlists.

His junior high teacher, Kellie, knew that Leonel more than fit the description. Not only did she write of his creativity, brilliance, and talent, but she also knew that Leonel “possesses leadership qualities that are not typically seen in people his age”.

Thanks to AG Bell’s Arts & Sciences Award, Leonel will be able to get in tune with the musical side of himself and lead his bandmates on the tour of the summer.

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 Arts & Sciences Award scholarship. Apply by February 16, 2026, to gain access to programs that help students participate in after-school, weekend or summer programs to enrich language and develop skills in the arts or sciences.
