Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) Auditory-Verbal Therapy (AVT) is a well-known, family-centred early intervention approach based on and informed by evidence that supports the needs of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and who are learning to listen, talk and think like their typically hearing peers. The approach has evolved with advances in early identification, hearing technologies, scientific research, and effective practice of LSL AVT intervention.
These developments led to improved outcomes in the LSL skills of children who are DHH. The increasing number of professionals pursuing and earning the LSL AVT certification credentials has generated significant interest in LSL AVT intervention globally and influenced the standards of practice of professionals such as speech-language pathologists, audiologists and teachers of the deaf.
Although there are many publications in English about LSL AVT intervention written by certified professionals, there are limited publications in other languages and none in Portuguese. Currently, only three professionals globally are certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialists in AVT (LSLS Cert. AVT) and are fluent in Portuguese. With the crescent interest in providing best practices to Portuguese-speaking families and their children who are DHH, the number of certified LSL Specialists will soon double.
Portuguese is the official language of Brazil, Portugal, Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tome and Príncipe, and the co-official language in East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, and Macau. With approximately 260 million native speakers and 35 million second-language speakers, approximately 300 million people speak Portuguese worldwide. There is clearly a need for more accessible information about the LSL AVT practice for Portuguese-speaking parents, caregivers, and the professionals who serve them.
The book “Terapia Auditiva-Verbal” (Auditory-Verbal Therapy), published by Thieme Revinter, aims to bring the theory and practice of LSL AVT to professionals, students, and family members in Portuguese-speaking countries. This book is the first one written in Portuguese and comprehensively explores the science, practice, and outcomes of LSL AVT services. It is intended for professionals and families currently involved in LSL AVT services, as well as those seeking to learn more about this evidence-based and evidence-informed approach. The book can be used in university courses of pediatric auditory (re)habilitation for graduate and post-graduate students in the areas of health sciences, communication, and education such as Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, Pedagogy, Phoniatry, and Otorhinolaryngology. In addition, it serves as a valuable resource for professionals working in the field of pediatric early auditory intervention.
In the pages of the “Terapia Auditiva-Verbal” book, the reader will find the representation of four generations of certified LSLS AVTs. This publication received the support of many colleagues, including the Sincronia Núcleo de Estudos TAV team, and is designed to be accessible to everyone who can benefit from it. Audição e Linguagem Falada (ALF) Terapia Auditiva-Verbal (TAV) é uma abordagem de intervenção precoce centrada na família, bem conhecida em todo o mundo, baseada e informada por evidências projetadas para apoiar as necessidades de crianças com surdez ou com perda auditiva (SPA) e que estão aprendendo a ouvir, falar e pensar como seus pares ouvintes. A abordagem evoluiu com avanços na identificação precoce, tecnologias auditivas de ponta, pesquisas científicas e práticas eficazes da intervenção ALF TAV. Esses desenvolvimentos levaram a melhores resultados nas habilidades ALF de crianças com SPA. O número crescente de profissionais que buscam e obtêm as credenciais de certificação em ALF TAV gerou um interesse significativo na intervenção globalmente e influenciou os padrões de prática de profissionais como fonoaudiólogos, terapeutas de fala e professores de crianças com SPA.
