An AG Bell Cradle-to-Career Moment

Bella Cutino participated in the Summer At Santa Catalina camp, a six-week camp for girls ages 8-14. For Bella, it was a sisterhood of friendships.

Bella, who has used bilateral cochlear implants since the age of 1, loved socializing with all ages, including helping the younger students. “Her camp leaders raved about her positive attitude she had the entire time she was there,” her parents, Bart and Kim Cutino, told AG Bell.

Although Bella was a day student and did not board at the school, she stayed at camp from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm, not wanting to miss one minute. She met boarding students from all over the world, experienced different cultures, and made many new friends.

Staying all six weeks allowed Bella to participate in musical theater and perform in The Addams Family play. The director cast Bella as Lurch, the zombie butler. She was beyond thrilled with this part because she was able to participate in most of the scenes without experiencing much pressure of memorizing lines. Because she built rapport with the director, she will get to participate in the high school fall musical, The Little Mermaid, despite only being in 8th grade.

The camp also included many different classes such as art, ceramics, sports, and cooking. Bella enjoyed all of them, as well as nightly outings to the beach and farmers’ market. In addition, the girls went to the boardwalk and went zip-lining on Saturdays. After this transformative experience, Bella will continue to grow and flourish.
